Our trip to Kenya was in September 2003 and we travelled from Mount Kenya to Diani Beach in Mombasa via Nairobi, Lake Navaisha, Lake Nakuru, Hells Gate Gorge and the Masai Mara. In Mount Kenya, the weather was colder than we expected and we were glad of a welcoming fire in our huts in the evenings, although we were sad not to see the elephants come to sample the salt blocks the owners left out for them. Staying at Elsamere, the former home of Joy Adamson of “Born Free” fame on the banks of Lake Navaisha was amazing - the house is situated in one of the most beautiful spots we have ever had the chance to stay at - with hippos coming into the gardens late at night to graze, and the most fabulous high tea served in the gardens on Sunday afternoon. By contrast, travelling on the night train from Nairobi to Mombasa was a little less comfortable, but just as interesting, even if the journey took twice as long as planned due to another train breaking down ahead of us! At Lake Nakuru we saw the famous Flamingoes and our visit to the was during the Wildebeeste and Zebra migration from the Serengeti - every dot on the landscape was yet another animal, and every group we saw had young with them.
